*TITLE: OHAFIA-ABAM WARRIORS: FROM WAR CANOES TO KINGS OF THE EASTERN DELTA — A STUDY OF POLITICAL, MILITARY AND ECONOMIC MARKERS IN RIVERS, BAYELSA AND DELTA STATES (1650-1964)**ABSTRACT*From Uduma Kalu This study examines the transformation of Ohafia and Abam mercenaries from oarsmen in Ijo war canoes to dynastic rulers in the Eastern Niger Delta. It identifies three cultural markers — War Canoe House system (_Omu Ande_), Ikperikpe war dance, and the Igbo four-day market week — as diagnostic tools for tracing Ohafia-Abam bloodline and influence beyond Rivers State into Bayelsa and Delta States. It argues that Eastern Ijo city-states (Bonny, Opobo, Kalabari, Okirika) are composite polities founded on Ijo navigation and Ohafia-Abam military labour, while Southeast Ijo (Nembe-Brass) exhibits partial Aro-Igbo influence, and Western Ijo (Delta) exhibits none.*CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION*Chief Oko Jumbo (died 1891) was a chief in the Kingdom of Bonny. Originally of Igbo origin. Chief Jumbo rose through the ranks in the Kingdom of Bonny, a state in the Niger Delta, now part of Rivers State, Nigeria.The above statement, though brief, challenges the mono-ethnic Ijo narrative of the Eastern Delta. Oko Jumbo's contemporary rival, Jaja of Opobo (born Mbanaso Okwaraozurumba in Amaigbo, 1821), shared the same origin. Both ex-slaves built their power on private armies recruited from Ohafia and Abam in present-day Abia State.*CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW AND METHODOLOGY*Existing works by Dike (1956) and Alagoa (1972) emphasize trade but underplay military labour. Jones (1963) notes the Trading States but not their ethnic composition. This paper uses oral tradition from Elu, Amaekpu, Ozu Abam, Ogan House Okirika, and Amachree House Buguma, cross-referenced with Colonial Office Records CO 82 and Leonard (1906).*CHAPTER THREE: THE THREE DIAGNOSTIC MARKERS**3.1 Marker 1: War Canoe House — _Omu Ande*_The war canoe was 18-24 metres, hollowed from single iroko, carrying 40-60 paddlers, 80-120 musket men, and 1-3 bow cannons known as _kurutu_.It functioned as:a) *State:* Each canoe had a flag, deity (_Ndem_), law and treasury. The canoe was the House. To lose a canoe was to lose citizenship. Bonny possessed about 50 war canoes in 1869.b) *Army:* In July 1863, the feud with the Nembe people of Brass flared up, with the Nembe the decisive victors. By December 1865 the Okrika had started ambushing Kalabari trading canoes, and Bonny was threatening to join in. In 1881, Jaja deployed 50 war canoes against Ibeno. Such operations required Ohafia amphibious infantry.c) *Economy:* One canoe conveyed 20 puncheons of palm oil. Control of choke points like Azumini meant control of all Ngwa and Ndoki oil.*Significance:* Pure Ijo fishing villages use _Polo_ (compound) system, not House system. House system indicates mercenary corporation. Victor Oko-Jumbo, who hails from the Sangama Community in Bonny Kingdom and is current Speaker of Rivers Assembly, is descendant of Oko Jumbo House — an Igbo-origin House.*3.2 Marker 2: Ikperikpe War Dance — The Head-Hunting Proof*Ikperikpe Ogu is the Ohafia war dance where dancer wears human skull, raffia skirt, and performs beheading mime with machete, accompanied by chants in Ohafia dialect.Ijo dances are water dances — gentle, wave-like movements honouring water spirits. Ikperikpe is land-based, aggressive, and celebrates decapitation — abhorrent to traditional Ijo.Its presence in Kalabari and Okirika coronations proves Abam ancestry. Kalabari historical records note Amachree I, who died around 1800, was the founder of the dynasty that bears his name. Oral tradition identifies him as an Igbo man and a great war strategist — an Abam war captain.*3.3 Marker 3: Four-Day Market Week — _Eke, Orie, Afo, Nkwo*_Traditional Ijo market follows 5-day or 8-day lunar-tidal cycle. Igbo hinterland uses 4-day week.All Eastern Delta trading centres — Bonny, Opobo, Ifoko, Ke, Bakana, Okirika — adopted Igbo 4-day week because their palm oil supply came from Aro, Ndoki, Ngwa and Abam hinterland. Nembe tradition confirms: Virtually everything of great traditional importance done in Nembe is done only after inquisition from Arochukwu! Ogan dynasty in Okirika — King Ogan installed 25 April 1964 as Amanyanabo of Okrika Clan. Amachree dynasty in Kalabari — Igbo origin. Jaja and Oko Jumbo in Bonny-Opobo — Igbo ex-slaves with Ohafia armies. All perform Ikperikpe.*Bayelsa (Southeast Ijo):* Nembe/Brass are described as Eastern Ijaw groups, Most of them have Igbo origin and Ijaw influence to form new ethnicities. Nembe/Brass, Ogbiya, Kalabari, Bonny and Opobo are some of the Eastern Ijaw groups. Influence is via Arochukwu oracle and trade, not direct Ohafia kingship.*Delta (Western Ijo):* No House, no Ikperikpe, no Igbo market. Comprises Ijo people believed to have migrated from Central Delta, linked to waterways. Their political organization remains _Polo_-based, without mercenary Houses.*CHAPTER FIVE: CONCLUSION*The diagnostic triad — War Canoe House, Ikperikpe, Four-Day Market — proves that Ohafia-Abam warriors did not merely fight for Eastern Ijo; they became Eastern Ijo. Their bloodline sits on thrones in Bonny, Opobo, Buguma, Abonnema and Okirika. Their influence thins to priestly-commercial influence in Nembe-Brass, Bayelsa, and disappears in Delta.The banning of war canoes after 1887 and the death of Oko Jumbo in 1891 and Jaja in 1891 ended the system, but the cultural markers remain at coronations today.*REFERENCES*1.
