13 Nigerian airlines get blacklisted, international lessors demand repossession of the planes.
Nigerian domestic airlines were blacklisted, first, for refusing to pay lessor fees over a period of time, contrary to the terms of their contracts.
Secondly, some domestic airlines took international lessors to court and refused to return their airplanes on demand after breaching the payment terms.
Contract between domestic airlines and lessors stipulates that the latter can demand the return of their aircraft in cases of payment refusal.
International aircraft lessors, firms who lease airplanes, backlisted 13 Nigerian carriers owing to the various contract defaults.
According to the report, the blacklisted domestic airlines are: Aero, Air Peace, Arik, Azman, Dana, Green Africa and Ibom Air. Others are Max Air, NG Eagle, Overland, Reno Air, United Nigeria Airline and Value Jet.With this removal, no Nigerian airline, including Air Peace, which planned to commence direct flight from Lagos to New York “soon,” can operate directly to any city or airport in the US until the country is re-audited and re-certificated by the FAA and returned to its former status.
