Nigeria disgraced at the UN human rights council

*APC Led-Federal Government Disgraced As Tinubu/Shettima's Government Seeks To Join The UN Human Rights Council*

_By Comr. Mike O. Enahoro_

_*What a sad situation and a bad omen to our dear nation...*_

Nigeria's recent attempt to join the United Nations Human Rights Council ended in embarrassment, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima receiving only three votes in a situation where, Ghana and Burundi secured 179 and 168 votes, respectively, while Malawi and Côte d'Ivoire were reelected with 182 and 181 votes.

This outcome has sparked concerns about Nigeria's global reputation and its ability to promote human rights. Some argue that Nigeria's internal challenges, such as insecurity, corruption, election rigging and manipulation, and economic decline, may have contributed to its poor showing. Others suggest that the country's failure to address human rights issues, such as the Boko Haram insurgency and treatment of minority groups, may have damaged its credibility.

The concept of a "failed state" has been debated in relation to Nigeria, with some experts arguing that the country exhibits characteristics of a failed state, including ineffective governance, insecurity, and economic stagnation. However, others contend that Nigeria's resilience and economic potential prevent it from being classified as a failed state.

What qualifies a nation to be considered a failed State?
_Ineffective Governance_: Lack of control over territory and borders.

_Insecurity_: Prevalence of violence, crime, and terrorism.

_Economic Decline_: Stagnation, corruption, and poverty.

_Human Rights Abuses_: Violations of fundamental rights and freedoms.

Nigeria's struggles with these issues have led to questions about its ability to promote human rights and uphold the values of the United Nations. The country's poor performance in the UN election serves as a wake-up call for its leaders to address these challenges and work towards strengthening its institutions and promoting human rights.

Ultimately, Nigeria's success in promoting human rights and achieving its development goals depends on its ability to address its internal challenges and demonstrate a commitment to the values of the United Nations.

Can Nigeria grow above board? The Edo State gubernatorial election that took place on September 21, 2024, is no pass mark for Nigeria to be counted among a none failed State. Under the All Progressive Congress APC led Federal, the reputation of Nigeria has be on the declining and now worse under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. That informed the embarrassing result scored by Nigeria as Tinubu/Shettima sought to be members of the UN Human Rights Council.
