In spite of willing male sponsors, I chose to suffer to graduate and choose who to marry... Nigerian woman

Adaeze Nwa Nsukka

First year in school as an undergraduate, I was not just broke, I was poor. My parents bought me rice, beans, garri, and abacha, then few Ingredients. Abacha was my fast food.

So those days, I had oil, Maggi and salt, but I like adding vegetable to my abacha at least to make it eatable. I lived at Odenigwe, I would walk down to Ogige from Ankys road, straight to that place they sell vegetables, and I would ask any of the sellers if I could pick the ugu that fell of from the bulk when they were dividing and tying it. They will ask me what I want to do with it, and I will tell them I want to cook small indomie and there was no need buying the ₦50 own, that it would be too much.

But the truth it, I didn't have ₦50, I couldn't afford fifty naira. Some will allow me pick, while others will remove one stalk with leaves from the bunch they are selling and give me. And I would be so happy.

One day, I craved swallow for weeks, I didn't have the ingredients for soup and I only drank garri. So I boiled and meshed potatoe that I had, added oil to form thickener, with Maggi, salt and pepper, I added small water leaf I got from our backyard and soup was ready to be eaten with my garri. My roommates were shocked and asked what type of soup was that, and I asked them if they don't cook it where they came from? That it's popular in my place, just to cover up.

I chose to suffer, because I had many men that wanted to sponsor me to marry me. But I chose to suffer, graduate and choose whom I want to marry. I will cry, clean my eyes and go and read my books.
For the life I live today.. Chukwu Dalu 🙏
