Reuben Abati's PhD is wasted education.

Reuben Abati's PhD is wasted education.

Why?
The current senate president had praised the Igbo during the events related to the burial of an Igbo senator who died recently. He said among other things, that Igbos go out to develop other parts of Nigeria and that other Nigerians do not do quite the same. That the said late senator was a true representation of the Igbo spirit.

Then, Abati was asked to respond to the senate president's comments on his TV program. Abati, after other kinder words about the Igbo, retorted that, according to TOS Bension (A Yoruba political leader who was born in 1917 and died in 2008) that Igbos don't sell land to strangers. That TOS had wanted to buy land and build a house in his Igbo wife's village and that the villagers had told him (TOS) they don't sell land to strangers. Abati went on to affirm his own opinion along the lines that Igbos go out and buy properties and build elsewhere, but do not sell land to others.

Now, Abati claims to hold a PhD. To obtain a PhD anywhere in the world, including in the local university from where Abati obtained his, requires conducting research for at least 3 years. In Nigeria, it takes longer. In most cases, such research involves conducting statistical analysis using sample populations and establishing margins of errors based on the sampling population size. Abati regurgitated the unproven claim made by TOS about his wife's village (one village) and extrapolated that to cover more than 30 million Igbos living in thousands of villages and towns and cities. The inability of Abati to conduct his own research and to gather data from a representative sampling of Igbos on the matter makes his PhD null and void. That he even believed what TOS Benson said in the 1960s or 70s or 80s, or 90s (whenever he had said it), and repeated it in 2024 makes his case even worse and deserved that his alma mater asks for their certificate back.

Assuming one Igbo village does not sell their land to strangers, how is that an Igbo-wide culture that should be linked to other Igbos?

Pray tell, the Redeemed Church, Deeper Life church, Living Faith church, and numerous other churches own properties across nearly all Igbo villages, towns and cities in Nigeria. These churches are private churches owned by Yoruba individuals. The church lands were sold to the Yoruba owners by Igbos.

GTB, Wema Bank, FCMB and a few other banks in Nigeria are 100% owned and managed by Yorubas. These banks have branches in Igbo towns and cities. The lands were sold to them by Igbos.

Polo Mall Enugu and the Onitsha Business School are owned by Yorubas

GLO Mobile is owned by a Yoruba. GLO has offices in Igbo cities. The lands where these offices are located were sold to GLO by Igbos.

There are 1000s of Yoruba who own private properties in Igboland. I personally know one in Umuahia.

I can go on and on. How come Abati does not know this? How come Abati cannot conduct simple research before bleating out on National TV in 2024 that Igbos don't sell land to strangers?

Abati is not only ill-educated, but he is also a bigot, because only a bigot can take an incidence by one person and extrapolate it to all persons related to that offender. Worse still an uncorroborated incidence that was said to have happened decades ago.
