_The people before Ohafia arrived_
*Archaeology*
- *Afikpo / Okposi / Edda*: Iron smelting furnaces, slag, pottery dated ∼750 BC - 200 AD. Shows continuous farming and iron tech for 2700 years.
- *Ugwuele Uturu*: Stone tools 250,000+ years old. Proves human occupation of the region since pre-modern times.
- *Ikom Monoliths, Cross River*: 200+ carved stones, 200-2000 years old. Earliest Nsibidi-like symbols.
*Culture*
- *Proto-Nsibidi*: Symbol system for record-keeping, law, and trade. Found first in Ikom, later in Afikpo as "Nsibidi Ogo".
- *Who were they?*: Likely proto-Igbooid / proto-Cross River groups. Ancestors of modern Ekoi, Bekwarra, and Eastern Igbo. No written names survive.
*DNA Evidence*
- Studies show "Eastern Igbo" cluster: Afikpo, Ohafia, Edda group genetically closer to Cross River/Cameroon peoples than to central Igbo.
- Indicates continuous occupation of Cross River basin for 3000+ years.
*Conclusion*: The land was not empty. There was a deep civilization here.

*LAYER 2: THE BENIN-ERA MIGRATION ∼1300 - 1400 AD*
_The "new arrivals" including Ohafia_
*Oral History*
- *Ohafia Origin*: Migrated from *Owa/Owari/Owarinuzo* in present-day Anioma, Delta State.
- *Time & Cause*: ∼13th-15th century. Displacement during Benin Empire expansion.
- *Travel Companions*: Same wave as Eze Chima group that founded Asaba, Onitsha, Oguta.
- *Settlement*: Moved east through Abam forest. Met "aboriginal" clans in present Ohafia land.
*Key Point*
Ohafia is <1000 years in present location. Benin Empire itself is <1000 years old.
Ohafia did not found Afikpo. Afikpo is older and called "mother" to Ohafia, Abam, Edda.
