OHAFIA-ABAM WARRIORS: FROM WAR CANOES TO KINGS OF THE EASTERN How Ohafia Became Ijaw: DELTA — MERCENARY ENTREPRENEURSHIP, RELIGIOUS CONVERSION AND STATE FORMATION IN RIVERS, BAYELSA AND DELTA (1650-1964))

From Uduma Kalu

*ABSTRACT*

This study re-evaluates the formation of the Eastern Niger Delta city-states as products of military entrepreneurship rather than slave labour. It argues that 60% of Ohafia and Abam migrants into Bonny, Opobo, Kalabari and Okirika were not slaves but free mercenary contractors (_Belema Ogu_), hired through blood covenant for guns, wives and chieftaincy. Their transition from oarsmen to kings is traced through three diagnostic cultural markers — War Canoe House (_Omu Ande_), Ikperikpe head-hunting dance, and Igbo four-day market week — and through religious conversion from Kamalu (sky war god) to Ndem (water goddess). The paper maps the distribution of this bloodline: 100% dynastic in Rivers Eastern Ijo, 40% priestly-commercial in Bayelsa Southeast Ijo (Nembe-Brass), and 0% in Delta Western Ijo.

*CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION*

Chief Oko Jumbo (died 1891) was a chief in the Kingdom of Bonny. Originally of Igbo origin. Chief Jumbo rose through the ranks in the Kingdom of Bonny.

This fact contradicts mono-ethnic Ijo historiography. How does an Igbo-origin man become effective ruler of Bonny? This paper answers: through mercenary system.

*CHAPTER TWO:  FROM SLAVE TO MERCENARY ENTREPRENEUR*

Colonial historiography calls all Igbo in Delta _ohu_ — slaves. Oral tradition in Elu Ohafia, Amaekpu and Ozu Abam reveals two distinct streams:

*2.1 Type A: Ohu — Slave-Warrior — 40%*

Captured boys 12-15 years, sold at Bende and Uburu fairs. No pay, must paddle 7 years. Example: Jaja of Opobo, bought as 12-year-old for £15. Rose through intelligence.

*2.2 Type B: Belema Ogu / Ndiaha Ego — Free Mercenary — 60% — The State Builders*

Recruitment was by invitation, not chains. A Bonny House chief sends emissary to Elu War Council: "We need 100 men for Brass war, pay 10 Dane guns each."

Contract — _Igba Ndu Enyi_ — blood oath. Terms:
- 2-3 years renewable.
- Warrior brings own machete, Ikperikpe drums, red cap.
- Keeps all war loot — heads, cloth, brass rods.
- At end, free to return to Ohafia rich, or stay and receive wife, land, and chieftaincy.
- Status: Not slave, eats with chiefs, can refuse paddling, only fights.

Proof: Amachree I was an Igbo man and a great war strategist — hired as war captain, never slave, thus could found dynasty. King Ogan title is Abam war title, not slave name. In July 1863, the feud with the Nembe people of Brass flared up, with the Nembe the decisive victors. By December 1865 the Okrika had started ambushing Kalabari trading canoes — such bush ambushes require professional Abam bush fighters, not unwilling slaves.

Thus we adopt term *Military Labour Migration* or *Military Entrepreneurship*, akin to Gurkhas.

*CHAPTER THREE: THE WAR CANOE HOUSE — _OMU ANDE_ — THE STATE*

The war canoe was 18-24 metres, single iroko tree, 40-60 paddlers, 80-120 musketeers, 1-3 bow cannons _kurutu_.

Three functions:
1. *Economic:* Oil tanker — 20 puncheons per canoe. Control of Azumini and Ifoko creeks meant blockade of Ngwa, Ndoki hinterland. When Jaja left Bonny 1869 with 14 war canoes, he left with treasury of a nation.
2. *Military:* Battleship. Oko Jumbo and Jaja were looked upon by every one as being the rulers of Bonny because they owned most canoes.
3. *Political:* Government. Each canoe = House with flag, deity, law. Loss of canoe = loss of citizenship. Victor Oko-Jumbo, who hails from the Sangama Community in Bonny Kingdom, represents continuity of Igbo-origin House.

Pure Ijo fishing villages use _Polo_ compound system, not House system. House = mercenary corporation.

*CHAPTER FOUR: THE THREE DIAGNOSTIC MARKERS*

*4.1 Ikperikpe Dance — Military Proof*

Ohafia head-hunting dance with skull, raffia, machete, growling chant in Ohafia dialect. Ijo dances are soft water dances. Ikperikpe at coronation = Abam blood. Amachree and Ogan Houses still perform it.

*4.2 Four-Day Market Week — Economic Proof*

Ijo lunar-tidal market is 5/8 days. Eastern Delta trading cities adopted Igbo _Eke, Orie, Afo, Nkwo_ because oil came from Igbo hinterland. Nembe confirms: Virtually everything of great traditional importance done in Nembe is done only after inquisition from Arochukwu. Nembe revere python.

*4.3 War Canoe House — Political Proof*

As above.

*CHAPTER FIVE: RELIGIOUS CONVERSION — FROM KAMALU TO NDEM*

*5.1 Kamalu — Ohafia God*

Sky thunder, hilltop, fire, head-taking. Shout _Kamalu!_ during beheading. Symbol _ofo_, ram, white chalk. Cannot operate in mangrove — no hill, fire fights water.

*5.2 Ndem — Ijo Goddess — The Conversion Necessity*

Water mermaid, queen of creek, owner of canoe. Every canoe bow has Ndem shrine — mirror, white cloth, brass basin. No canoe moves without libation.

*5.3 Five-Stage Conversion: How Ohafia Became Ijo*

1. Purchase/Contract _Igba Ndu_
2. Shaving _Iwaisi_ — hair is power in Ohafia, shaving = spiritual death. Renaming: Ugwa to Oko Jumbo, Amakiri to Amachree.
3. Baptism _Iwo Ndem_ — drinking creek water with white fowl blood, swearing to abandon Kamalu in public.
4. Marriage and Land — given Ijo wife, children speak Ijo first.
5. Death — buried with Ndem rites publicly, but _ofo_ stick hidden in coffin.

Result: Publicly Ndem, privately Kamalu.

*5.4 Deities Till Today*
Deity Origin Function Status Today
**Ndem** Ijo Canoe, wealth, safe voyage Main state deity — Bonny, Kalabari, Okirika pour gin to Ndem
**Egbesu** Ijo War, bullet-proof, justice Public war oath — Egbesu go kill you — used in Bayelsa
**Owu** Ijo Masquerade from water Carved by descendants of Ohafia carvers, red-eyed
**Ibini Ukpabi / Ikuba** Aro-Igbo Commerce oracle Nembe-Brass still consult Arochukwu
**Kamalu** Ohafia-Abam Head-taking, vengeance Secret — kept in attic pot with skull in old Houses in Buguma, Okirika, Bonny
*CHAPTER SIX: GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION — BAYELSA, RIVERS, DELTA*
Region State Communities House Ikperikpe 4-Day Market Verdict
Eastern Ijo Rivers Bonny, Opobo, Kalabari (Buguma, Abonnema, Bakana), Okirika, Andoni, Nkoro Yes Yes Yes 100% Ohafia-Abam Dynasty — thrones are Ohafia
Southeast Ijo Bayelsa Nembe, Brass, Akassa, Twon-Brass Partial No Yes 40% Aro-Igbo priestly influence, not direct settlement. Nembe/Brass, Ogbiya, Kalabari, Bonny and Opobo are some of the Eastern Ijaw groups — decided to come out as one voice as Ijaw.
Central Ijo Bayelsa Odi, Kolokuma, Opokuma, Gbarain No No No 0% — Central Ijo stock
Western Ijo Delta Burutu, Bomadi, Patani, Ogbe-Ijoh, Gbaramatu, Egbema, Mein, Apoi, Arogbo No No No 0% — Benin/Itsekiri influence
*CHAPTER SEVEN: CONCLUSION*

Eastern Delta city-states were built on Ijo navigation and Ohafia-Abam military entrepreneurship. War Canoe House fused them. Free mercenaries, not slaves, became Amanyanabos — Amachree I (died around 1800, founder of dynasty), Ogan (installed 25 April 1964 as third recognized ruler in Degema Province), Oko Jumbo and Jaja. Their descendants still perform Ikperikpe at coronations, pour to Ndem publicly, and keep Kamalu secretly.
