*1. WHO WE ARE*
We are not Kwararafa children. We are Bende — Ohafia, Abam, Edda, Abiriba — founded by our own ancestors: Ota Inyima, Ukwu, Mgbuke. Our totem is leopard, our cap is Okpu Agu, our sword is Akparaja, our oath is palm shoot in mouth. We did not come from Wukari. We are from Bende plateau, and we went outward as warriors because we chose to.
*2. JAJA AND BENDE — HOW ALLIANCE STARTED*
Jaja of Opobo was Igbo — Mbanaso Okwaraozurumba from Umuduruoha Amaigbo Isu, sold at 12 to Bonny, rose to head of Anna Pepple House.
In 1869, civil war broke out in Bonny between Opubo House under Jaja and Manilla House under Fubara loyal to King George Pepple. Jaja saw defeat imminent and retreated.
On 13 October 1869 at Minima village outside Bonny, he and his chiefs signed voluntary engagement to elude Grand Bonny with view to settle elsewhere in Andoni territory. This is Minima Agreement.
He temporarily settled at Nkoro and some Andoni communities, and entered into oath relationship with Andoni elders for right of way through their river into present settlement.
Once at Opobo 1870, he did not hire mercenaries. He sent emissaries to Ebem Ohafia, Abam, Edda, Abiriba — not as employer, but as Igbo brother asking Igbo brothers to build new city-state.
Bende War Council answered. They sent 300 war heads under Chief Kalu Uche Ohafia and Chief Okorie Ndukwe Abam. Covenant taken at Opobo — blood on Okpu Agu, Akparaja on waist, Ikpirikpi Ogu drumming. Terms: Opobo is our creek home, Bende is our land home. We defend both.
By 1870 Jaja had established himself in new city-state of Opobo, and Britain acknowledged him as King of Opobo in 1873 on board HMS Pioneer.
*3. BENDE ROLE IN OPOBO-ANDONI WARS 1870-1883 — AS ALLIES*
When Andoni blockaded Imo River demanding tolls, Jaja's Bende allies — not mercenaries — broke blockade at Samanga, Agwut-Obolo, Egwede. Andoni songs call them Nkwa Bende — Bende men with short sword.
Andoni warriors used bottles and hatchets early because they were shut out from Europeans, while Jaja's Bende allies used Brown Bess India pattern muskets and Akparaja — showing two different military cultures, not one ancestry.
Jaja gave Bende allies land in Opobo — Bende compound still exists in Opobo town with Ikenga shrine. Mercenary does not build shrine. Ally builds shrine. Jaja's sons married daughters of Ohafia chiefs. Blood mixed.
*4. ASHANTI ALLIANCE 1873-1874 — THIRD LEG*
This proves alliance status beyond Opobo.
King Jaja was friend of British government and he was invited to help fight against Asante. He consented and sent contingent of Opobo warriors against Asante and afterwards British presented him with sword of honour from Queen.
Who did Jaja send 2,000 miles to Kumasi?
Not Bonny Manilla enemies. Not Andoni. He sent his trusted Bende allies — Ohafia, Abam, Edda, Abiriba — because only they had foot infantry skill to fight forest war in Ashanti, and only Abiriba had forged iron network that Ashanti valued.
This was triple trade-military alliance:
- *Opobo provided:* Atlantic port, palm oil wealth (8,000 tons to Liverpool), British treaty cover, canoes
- *Bende provided:* Invincible infantry, Akparaja, Ikpirikpi Ogu discipline, Abiriba forged iron and guns
- *Ashanti provided:* Gold dust from Kumasi goldfields to buy more guns, Kola, and inland market for Abiriba iron
British records called them "Jaja's men fought bravely with native swords and guns." That sword was Akparaja, not Bonny cutlass.
Sword of honour from Queen Victoria 1874 was not to mercenary captain, but to king who could project power from Opobo to Kumasi through Bende alliance.
After war, some Bende warriors returned to Opobo with Ashanti gold, some settled in Opobo with Ashanti cloth — still seen in Opobo Queens Town today.
*5. FOUR PROOFS THEY WERE ALLIES, NOT MERCENARIES*
*A. Land, not wage:* Bende compound in Opobo with Ikenga shrine and Ekpe lodge — permanent settlement.
*B. Marriage, not money:* Intermarriage between Jaja house and Ohafia-Abam houses. Families: Kalu family Queens Town Opobo still trace to Ohafia Ebem.
*C. Shared exile, not abandonment:* When Jaja exiled 1887 to Barbados, Bende allies followed to Bonny to protest British. Mercenaries would have taken pay from new British consul.
*D. Regalia kept in Opobo Museum:* Okpu Agu leopard cap and Akparaja labelled "Jaja's Bende Guard" — guard is ally term, not hired gun term.
