Okoronkwo's 73 goals Vasco Dagama

By Maxim Uxoatu

The first time the name struck me was through a banner headline on the sports page of the then East Central State newspaper Daily Star in the 1970s:
"Okoronkwo Scores Vasco's Vital Goal!"
It was a pulsating match between Enugu Rangers and Vasco Da Gama that ended as a 1-1 stalemate.
Before one could say "Stanley Okoronkwo", Rangers FC's managers bought over the impeccable player.
In Rangers' white colours, Stanley Okoronkwo was immaculate and inimitable.
His touches were poetry in motion, and if he dribbled you, you saluted the dribble!
When many years later I met Stanley's beautiful nieces on Ijaiye Road, Ogba, Lagos, they were only calling him "Uncle Stanley" without knowing his legendary status!
I found it well-nigh impossible to get the young ladies to understand that their uncle was a living legend.
As Stanley Okoronkwo passes away from this turf, I can only say that they no longer make soccer players like the elegant one from Arochukwu.
Adieu, Englishman!
