Language is a Beautiful Thing
By Uduma Kalu
Language is a beautiful thing, such a beautiful thing. It's like as they say, in the beginning was the word. And the word was God. And God is such a beauty. The most beautiful thing on Earth is God. And that is language. To create a beautiful word, you create a language that is without dent, perfect in everywhere. Poetic. Sweet. Balanced. Arcane. Ornamented. Sublime. Full of etiquette and decorum. Polished. Refined. Smooth. Respectful. Decent. Class. Classic.
It's like a beautiful bride out in the square for her bridal dance. Like a beautiful masquerade dazzlingly beautiful in the sun. Imagine the artistry that went into its creation. Such ingenuity. Such artistry. Such perfection. And suddenly, someone dashes out from the crowd, rough and rowdy and douses the pride of the community, the beautiful bride or masquerade with sputty, dirt or smug. That beauty dies. Remember beautiful things are Godly like language. They are from God. To smug this beauty is to smug Godliness.
I say this thing as a wordsmith trained in the use of language. Language is immortal. It's eternal. It returns to us, showcases our personality, life and history, position and personality. Imagine if someone gathers your writings into a book to present you to the public and your language is seen as a smug. Language shows your training and class in society. We have the lower class whose language is untrained. We have the middle which language is educated and refined. We have the upper class full of air and uppishness. Nothing. Like royalty. Except it reflects the language of the middle class and polished.
Such a book tell's about us in so many ways that readers always are the final arbiters of history. Language is the vehicle to that judgement.
That's why I will always always advise rubbing s word like sweet in our mouths before we release them to public. Like Achebe would weigh his words, rubbing each in his mouth that once released, you can't but fall in love with it. Things fall apart is a case sstudy here.
That's poetry. Language is poetry. And only beautiful words make beautiful poetry. Before you make a statement, weigh its poetry, which is beauty. Which is harmony, the balance of everything beautiful things are eternal. Are your words eternal like God? Beautiful things are Godly.
