Every African mask you have ever seen started as a termite mound.
*1. THE FIRST MASK - MBUTI - 150,000 YEARS AGO*
In Ituri forest, Congo, Mbuti pygmies do not carve wood masks. They are the first mask.
At initiation, a boy enters *mukpu* - termite mound hollow. Inside, elders smear his body with white clay from mound, put feathers on his head, raffia around his waist, and give him a bark cloth that covers face.
He is no longer human. He is *forest spirit* - small dwarf who lives in mound and water.
He dances. He cannot speak, only hoots.
This is not costume. This is mask in its oldest form: *mound as mask*. Body becomes mound.
Genetics: L0a2, 150k years. Word: *mbu* = first/forest, *mukpu* = mound.
All masks come from this.
*2. THE SECOND MASK - TASSILI - 7000 BCE*
When Sahara was green, painters at Tassili n'Ajjer, Algeria, painted the first image of mask.
Round Head Period, 6000 BCE: small figures with feather headdresses, raffia skirts, faces hidden, holding sticks. Same as Mbuti boy in mukpu.
Beside them, they paint sickle canoes - proof these mask-men paddled.
This painting is first proof mask traveled from forest to desert.
*3. THE THIRD MASK - IKOM AND IBIBIO - 200 BCE - MOTHER CARVES FACE*
In forest, clay washes away. Mother needs permanent mask.
At Ikom, Cross River, Ejagham carve *Akwanshi monoliths* - basalt stones with faces. Dwarf faces, bearded, wide eyes. This is first wood-to-stone mask.
From stone, they carve wood.
Ibibio/Efik create three masks Mother will give to Igbo:
*a) Ndem / Mmonwu - water dwarf mask*
Small head, big belly, white clay, feather hat. Same as Mbuti mukpu dancer, same as Egyptian Bes. Lives in water and mound. Today Igbo calls *aka nshi*, *nwa nshi*.
*b) Ekpe / Mgbe - leopard mask*
Raffia body, leopard spots painted, wooden face with fangs. Dancer wears leopard skin. Same as Mbuti leopard hunter, same as Ohafia Igbo leopard, same as Egyptian sem priest in leopard skin. This is secret society mask - you must buy it.
*c) Ekpo - ancestor mask*
Tall, ugly, black face, raffia. Represents dead who come from mound. Same as Mbuti ancestor who lives in mukpu.
All three have Nsibidi marks carved on forehead - Mother's writing.
DNA: L1c - 70,000 years. Highest in Ibibio. She invented wooden mask.
*4. THE FOURTH MASK - IGBO - MMANWU - CHILD WHO MULTIPLIES*
Igbo takes Mother's three and makes 400.
Because Igbo lives at Niger where 400 clans meet, each clan needs own face.
How Igbo makes mask:
- Face is *mkpumkpu* - great mound. Carver says "I carve mkpumkpu, not wood." Same word Mbuti mukpu.
- White chalk *nzu* from mound, same as Mbuti white clay.
- Feather hat *okpu ozo* - same as Mbuti feather, same as Tassili painting, same as Bes crown.
- Raffia *oghu* - same as Mbuti raffia, same as Ekpe.
Four families:
*1. Mmuo - spirit / dwarf family (oldest)*
Aka nshi, Agbogho Mmuo (maiden), Ijele (giant). Small face, white. Lives in mkpumkpu behind house. Same as Mbuti. L0/L1c DNA. This is 150k year mask.
*2. Agu - leopard family*
Ohafia leopard, Okonko leopard, Ekpe. Spotted, fangs, blood poured on mkpu. Same as Ennedi leopard paintings 4000 BCE, same as Egyptian sem priest. This is 60k year mask.
*3. Mmonwu - ancestor family*
Mgbede, Ekpo, Ozo. Tall black faces. Dead come from mound. This is Ndem family.
*4. Nri - bronze family (youngest)*
Igbo Ukwu bronze heads, 9th century AD. Lost-wax faces with Nsibidi marks, dwarf features. Same face as Ikom monoliths, same as Bes. Proof mask moved from stone to bronze to wood.
Egypt took same: Bes dwarf mask in bronze, Anubis jackal mask, leopard skin priest mask.
*5. WHY MASK HAS NO MOUTH OR MOUTH IS SMALL*
Mbuti boy in mukpu cannot speak - forest spirit hoots.
Ibibio Ekpe cannot speak - makes leopard growl.
Igbo Mmanwu does not speak Igbo - speaks spirit language, translator speaks.
Egyptian mask priest does not speak - only eyes.
Because first mask came from mound. Mound has no mouth. You enter mound, you lose human speech.
*CONCLUSION - PEOPLE FROM EARTH WEAR EARTH*
Mask origin:
Mukpu (termite mound house) -> white clay body + feather (Mbuti, 150k) -> rock painting of feather dancer (Tassili, 7k BCE) -> stone face (Ikom, 200 BCE) -> wooden face with raffia (Ibibio Ekpe/Ndem) -> 400 wooden faces (Igbo Mmanwu) -> bronze face (Igbo Ukwu 9th c, Egyptian Bes)
Every mask is still mkpumkpu. When Igbo carver in Aba carves today, he still goes to mkpumkpu to take clay and says "nna anyi si na ala puta - our father came from earth."
Mask is earth that dances.
*mbu (first) -> mukpu (mound) -> mkpumkpu (great mound) -> mmanwu (mask of mound).*
