The child she is carrying on her shoulder was apparently sick and couldn't walk. She picked him up and placed him on her shoulder while still backing the last child. The oldest of the kids may not be 8 years old, yet she already has four kids. Other women would abandon these kids and turn them over to the growing army of almajiris. But her love for her kids didn't let her abandon her children as is often the case in the northwest.

The government must roll out a cultural adjustment program that should first convince the traditional rulers and religious rulers of the North on the need to enroll their children in school with emphasis on girls. They will also seek to end polygamy and mass wedding which the government conducts. Without ending polygamy and ensuring girls spend longer years in school, the north's high fertility which is caused by early marriage and polygamy won't be checked. Getting traditional and religious leaders involved will help make the people accept the change.
